Chevy Discontinues the Super-Powerful SS Sedan

Chevrolet has announced that the beloved Chevrolet SS will be discontinued this year. GM has confirmed to multiple news outlets that the SS will end production sometime in 2017 and will not return.

It’s sad news for Chevrolet enthusiasts who have grown to love the SS for its subtle yet classic style and its intense power. There’s nothing quite like this cool little sedan that packs a 415 horsepower V8 engine, exquisite rear-wheel drive and an available six-speed manual transmission. In fact, it’s very rare to find all of those features in the same vehicle. Maybe that’s why the SS grew to have a reputation for being a niche vehicle, the very thing that appears to have killed its viability as a production car.

The Chevy SS was based primarily on the Holden Commodore, an Australian-market GM vehicle. Since GM announced plans to shut down Holden in 2013, fans of the SS have expected the inevitable death of the SS ever since. With the Holden, so goes the SS–the last truly old-school muscle car.

Although the Chevy SS found its footing in NASCAR (the vehicle represented Chevy for several years), the SS never quite achieved success as a consumer car. In 2014, GM sold 2,479 units of the SS; 2,895 in 2015; and 3,013 in 2016. Sales were solid but not remarkable–another testament to the SS’s niche status. In every respect, it was a cult vehicle; those who loved it, really loved it but many were simply unaware it was an option for them.

Ordering for the Chevy SS ended in February, which means that the last remaining models are already sitting on lots at your local Antioch Chevy dealerships. It appears that the vehicle’s relative scarcity has helped increase interest–Chevy has already reported sales of over 1,500 in the first three months of 2017, with 1,217 sold in March of 2017 alone.
